Hong Kong has long been regarded as a multilingual city. There are multilingual citizens as well as different language communities.  Cantonese and English are the two official languages in the region; however, some minority languages/ dialects can often be heard on the streets and at home.

With the interviews conducted with the residential Filipinos and Filipino domestic helpers, we may have a general pattern of their different language use in different situations. The relationship between language and power is going to be explored and help us understand the contributing factors in their use of different languages. The following gives more details.
